Some
breathtakingly beautiful backgrounds of modern and ancient Greece and an
outstanding portrayal of an embittered wife by Angela Lansbury fail to
compensate for the inept performance by Jane Fonda in this dull and generally
lifeless drama produced by John Houseman, who has given the screen “Lust for
Life” and “Julius Caesar.”
However, the
marquee draw of Peter Finch, plus that of Fonda and Lansbury, will attract the
women patrons, especially in the key cities.
The story by
Meade Roberts, from a novel by Susan Ertz, deals with two unhappy couples who
plan a trip to Greece to try to rejuvenate their fading romances. When the
younger woman’s husband is forced to stay behind, she falls in love with the
husband of the other woman, a surly, facially scarred wife.
Their
adventures in Greece, among the classic ruins and with some lively, dancing
natives, all photographed in Panavision and Metrocolor, will keep audiences
interested but this all leads up to an unnecessarily tragic finale.
Miss Lansbury
and Arthur Hill, playing a mild-mannered, overly devoted husband, capture the
acting honors, although Finch shows up well, especially in contrast to Miss
Fonda. Robert
Stevens directed.

THE
STORY: “In the Cool of the Day”
Peter Finch,
a book publisher whose wife, Angela Lansbury, continues to taunt him about an
automobile accident which left her facially scarred, meets Jane Fonda, a girl
who has been over-protected by her mild-mannered husband, Arthur Hill. Hill,
who persuades Finch to have their wives join them on a vacation trip to Greece,
is forced to remain behind because of his father’s illness.
In Greece,
Finch and Jane take delight in touring the ancient wonders while Angela remains
in her hotel room and finally takes up with a philandering traveler. When she
walks out on Finch, he continues his travels with Jane until she takes cold one
rainy day and dies of pneumonia just after Hill reaches her bedside. Finch goes
on alone visiting the places he and Jane had hoped to see together.
