   In the beginning, the Acropolis was simply a fortified citadel similar to many throughout Greece. The world itself means high place [: άκρον πόλεως]. Here, within the fort, Mycenaean kings had built their place.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  

/ - 2.

 

 

 

 

   The statue showed Athena wearing her magnificent golden helmet, and leaning by her side was her shield in which lay coiled the secret serpent. In the innermost sanctuary of the temple were kept the goddess’ treasures.
