When it was
invented in Cuba in 1939, mambo blended then-contemporary Cuban dance rhythms
with the ritual rhythms of African fraternities in Cuba. As the played, members
of these fraternities chanted the word “mambo”, which, according to Yale
Professor Roberto Farris Thompson, translates into “multiple conversations” or “conversations
with God”.
Cuban big
bands, such as one headed by Perez Prado, took the sound around the world,
meshing it with jazz, be-bop and swing.
By the 1950s,
mambo mania was global. Hollywood stars mamboed at the Palladium club in New
York. Hong Kong dance girls did the mambo in the movie “The World of Suzie Wong”. Even Perry Como and Rosemary Clooney recorded
mambo songs. Clooney’s “Mambo Italiano” was resurrected as the opening song for
the 1988 Jonathan Demme film “Married to the Mob.”.
Mambo, the
music, is characterized by a big-band sound with layers of brass and
percussion, elongated notes and syncopation.
Mambo, the
dance, is more African in its mood, with intricate foot-work and sensually
convulsive soulder movements. Dancers become possessed by its passionate,
ritualistic movements.
