In
June 1969, Alexandros Panagoulis was free for four days after escaping from a
prison near Athens. Since his recapture he has been in a cell at the Greek
military police training centre in central Athens.
Mr.
Stamatopoulos said Lady Fleming and her companions were being interrogated by
military authorities and, under the law, could not be seen by a lawyer until
the questioning was completed. They were all in good health.
He named Lady
Fleming’s three companions as 40-year-old Greek-American divorcee Athina
Psichoyou, 28-year-old American student John Skelton, and 28-year-old Greek student
Constantine Androutsopoulos, a friend of Panagoulis.
Mr. Stamatopoulos
said Panagoulis would be tried with Lady Fleming and her companions as an
accomplice.
Last year
Lady Fleming was banned for a few weeks from leaving Greece. This was after she
testified at a court martial in defence of 34 prominent Athenians charged with
plotting to overthrow the military regime, which has been in power since April
1967.
Her husband
Sir Alexander Fleming, died in March, 1955, aged 73. He was knighted in 1944
for his discovery of penicillin and was awarded the Nobel prize for medicine
the following year.
