Artist of the Year for 1972: David Bowie

No one brought as much freshness and imagination to rock music in 1972 as did Bowie, a figure who is in the forefront of the new theatrical emphasis in rock.

Equally effective on record or stage, Bowie is a talented, elusive, exciting figure who puts one of the surest artistic stamps on his music of anyone since Phil Spector.

Τα 10 καλύτερα albums για το 1972

 (σύμφωνα με τον αρθρογράφο )

/ - 3.

David Bowie’s “Hunky Dory” and “Ziggy Stardust” (2 albums)

“Hunky Dory” is probably the best way to get into Bowie’s mucic, but “Ziggy” is an even more important work, a concept album that reflects much of the power, excitement and ambition of the Who’s “Tommy”.

“Hunky Dory”

(released on 17 December 1971)

“Ziggy Stardust”

(released on 16 June 1972)

Neil Diamond’s “Moods”.

Diamond, took an adventurous step forward in this album.

/ - το εξώφυλλο

Elton John’s “Honky Chateau”.

The English singer-writer-pianist comes up with one of the year’s most joyous works.

/ - το εξώφυλλο

Joni Mitchell’s  “For The Roses”.

Joni Mitchell, as literate as writer as we have, continues to produce songs of richness and value.

 / - το εξώφυλλο

Randy Newman’s  “Sail Away”.

In his most satiric album yet, Newman puts some of the world’s absurdities to music so that, hopefully, those absurdities become all the more obvious.

/ - το εξώφυλλο

John Prine’s  “Diamonds In The Rough”

The second album from the best country-folk writer in America.

/ - το εξώφυλλο

Procol Harum’s  “Live In Concert”.

As powerful a wedding of rock-choral-orchestral sounds as rock has yet produced.

/ - το εξώφυλλο

Procol Harum “Live in Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra”

Rolling Stones’  “Exile On Main Street”.

There are some weak moments, but also some of the strongest rock ’n’ roll tracks in recent years.

/ - το εξώφυλλο  [(διπλό άλμπουμ)]

Cat Stevens’  “Catch Bull At Four”.

One of the 1972’s few consensus favorite albums in the normally fragmented world of pop music.

/ - το εξώφυλλο

Jesse Winchester’s  “Third Down, 110 To Go”.

One of the year’s best works, it is a rich, deeply human, gentle album that is almost an ode to life, both its struggles and rewards.
