Peter Watkins
in his first full-length film “Privilege” is portraying the pop music hysteria
in a merciless satire.
The most
popular figure in Britain is a young, desultory pop singer, Paul Jones.
Jones is a
puppet at the hands of an enormous corporation and he is used to suit the will
of the tycoons and the government.
We see him
first diverting the teen-age population from politics. Then it occurs to his
manipulators that it would best assuage the nation’s fear of anarchy by
thumping for worldly renunciation.
Here the
Church fathers are brought in, listen to a monk-clad pop group’s awful version
of “Onward Christian soldiers”, buy the act and stage a huge conversion rally. Our
hero sings an anguished pop-hymn as the lame and crippled reach out to be
blessed.

In
“Privilege” Watkins projects everyone a few years into the future when
conformity, conformity, conformity is the only way to exist.

Into a position of privilege he puts a pop singer (Steven Shorter) whose job is to pack teenagers and into concert halls where they can vent their violent feelings instead of bursting on to the streets where peace must be kept.

The singer (Steven Shorter) is used by the Establishment for all sorts of commercial things – like getting fans to eat apples that are a glut on the market; and finally, to woo backsliders to the church, recording “Onward Christian Soldiers” in rock tempo and by appearing on stage at a gigantic rally to bring non-believers into the fold.

magnetically on Paul Jones (Steven Shorter), a real-life singer who plays
someone approaching himself in “Privilege”.

He is a handsome idol, and his desperate attempts to escape the trap of popular adoration and fame are transferred to the screen with agonizing desperation. The songs he sings add to the tension and his fall from grace is given tragic proportions through his looks of forlorn frustration. Yet at no time does ne show any attributes that might have created his public image.
Jean Shrimpton as Vanessa Ritchie
Jean Shrimpton, world famous model, the only other sympathetic character in the plot (as Vanessa Ritchie), wears not to well as an actress.
But certainly she is a reason enough for Jones (Steven Shorter) to abandon all for even a short future with the girl who loves him.

“Privilege” is strictly
fiction although Peter Watkins, the director, sticks to a semi-documentary style
of presentation.
