NEW YORK – Being a beautiful actress means that a girl is two different people.

She is, first, the person she plays in movies or television or on the stage. In many cases, that means she is an ingénue, making love to a handsome leading man and eventually settling down to a hapy home life and raising kids or chickens of both.

And second, she is herself. In most cases, this means she is a glamorous star with a record of two or three divorces, possibly a child or two being raised by a governess, a date book crammed with parties and fancy affairs, an every-other-day appointment with the hair-dresser, a weekly date with the dress designer, a daily hour of exercising, a rigid diet and a couple of actors, lawyers and hat manufacturers wooing her.

Between these two totally different women, it is often difficult for a beautiful actress to distinguish which is which.

And so, when it comes to recognizing honest true love, she is frequently fooled.

“If you want a key to my character” says Janice Rule, “think of this – my fist husband was a writer and so is my second. I think I may be a Trilby looking for a Svengali”.

Many of the other actresses feel the same, or apparently do, although few can articulate their thoughts as well as Janice. They seem to want someone strong enough to force them to give up their artificial second lives and yet most of them are stronger than the men they meet. They seldom find their Svengalis.
