Elton John al piano-forte, Buddy Rich alla batteria, Lionel Hampton al vibrafono, Paul Me Cartney al basso, Gerry Mulligan al sax baritono, Eric Clapton alla chitarra. Neil Diamond e Carly Simon cantanti: questi sono alcuni dei componenti dell'orchestra ideale del 1974 secondo i risultati del referendum che ogni anno la rivista americana Playboy indice fra i suoi lettori.
Ciascun musicista, cioè, è il vincitore della categoria riservata al suo strumento o alla sua specialità. E', come si può notare, un'orchestra ideale abbastanza assurda, che vede riuniti nomi del jazz, del rock e del pop che, se davvero suonassero insieme in una big-band, farebbero probabilmente rabbrividire sia un appassionato di jazz sia un accanito fan del rock per la diversità dei loro stili, in molti casi decisamente inconciliabili.
L'idea, comunque, è divertente, ed è il caso di elencare la formazione al completo: oltre ai già citari solisti la 1974 Playboy All-Stars Band • comprende Keith Emerson all'organo, lan Anderson al flauto. Doc Severinsen prima tromba e leader, Miles Davis seconda tromba, Al Hirt terza tromba e Herb Alpert quarta tromba (non sarebbe difficile immaginarsi le risse fra questi quattro trombettisti), J J. Johnson, Si Zentner, Slide Hampton e Maynard Ferguson, nell’ordine, ai tromboni, Pete Fountain al clarinetto, Cannonball Adderley al primo sax alto e Edqar Winter al secondo, Stan Getz primo sax tenore e Boots Randolph secondo, gli Allman Brothers come gruppo vocale Completano la lista Elton John, in qualità di compositore, Berme Taupin (co-autore di quasi tutti i pezzi di Elton John) a pari merito con John nella stessa categoria, e i Chicago come gruppo strumentale
L'eterogeneità di questa formazione è dovuta naturalmente al fatto che i vari musicisti sono stati votati da un pubblico altrettanto eterogeneo gli appassionati di jazz hanno scelto i jazzisti, i ragazzi e i giovani ai quali piace più il rock hanno dato le loro preferenze ai musicisti pop.

Elton John on piano, Buddy Rich on drums, Lionel Hampton on vibraphone, Paul McCartney on bass, Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax, Eric Clapton on guitar. Neil Diamond and Carly Simon as vocalists: these are some of the members of the ideal orchestra of 1974 according to the results of the referendum conducted annually by the American magazine Playboy among its readers.
Each musician, that is, is the winner of the category reserved for their instrument or specialty. As can be noted, this is a rather absurd ideal orchestra, consisting of names from jazz, rock, and pop, who, if they actually played together in a big band, would probably send shivers down the spine of both a jazz lover and a devoted rock fan due to the diversity of their styles, which in many cases are decidedly incompatible.
The idea, however, is fun, and it is worth listing the complete lineup: in addition to the already mentioned soloists, the 1974 Playboy All-Stars Band includes Keith Emerson on organ, Ian Anderson on flute, Doc Severinsen on first trumpet and leader, Miles Davis on second trumpet, Al Hirt on third trumpet, and Herb Alpert on fourth trumpet (it wouldn't be hard to imagine fights among these four trumpet players), J.J. Johnson, Si Zentner, Slide Hampton, and Maynard Ferguson, in that order, on trombones, Pete Fountain on clarinet, Cannonball Adderley on first alto sax, and Edgar Winter on second, Stan Getz on first tenor sax, and Boots Randolph on second, the Allman Brothers as the vocal group. Completing the list are Elton John as composer, Bernie Taupin (co-writer of almost all of Elton John's songs) tied with John in the same category, and Chicago as the instrumental group.
The heterogeneity of this lineup is naturally due to the fact that the various musicians were voted by a similarly heterogeneous audience—jazz enthusiasts chose the jazz musicians, while the kids and young people who prefer rock gave their preferences to pop musicians.
The greater popularity of pop and rock compared to jazz is much more evident in the section of the referendum dedicated to "Albums of the Year," which is divided into three categories: best long-playing by a big band, best long-playing by a small group, and best vocal long-playing.
In the first category, Prelude, the first 33 rpm album by Brazilian pianist and composer Eumir Deodato, won, followed by Tommy by The Who (with the London Symphony Orchestra), The Grand Wazoo by Frank Zappa, and M.F. Horn II by Maynard Ferguson.
Among the groups, Chicago leads with Chicago VI, followed by Birds of Fire by the Mahavishnu Orchestra of John McLaughlin, A Passion Play by Jethro Tull, and The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd.

Un'altra sezione dell'inchiesta riguarda il personaggio più importante del mondo della musica jazz e pop. Quest'anno il titolo è andato a Duane Allman, uno degli Allman Brothers, morto alla fine del 1971 in un incidente stradale, ma il cui mito è ora assai vivo fra i moltissimi fans del gruppo, adesso guidato dal fratello Gregg. Seguono lan Anderson, Neil Diamond. Elton John, Paul Simon, Ringo Starr, Doc Severinsen, Buddy Rich, Carole King e Chuck Berry Quanto al jazz vero e proprio, c'è un'altra classifica, compilata attraverso I voti dei vincitori dei precedenti referendum.
Quest'anno miglior band-leader è risultato ancora Duke Ellington, seguito da Quincy Jones, da Thad Jones e Mei Lewis, da Doc Severinsen e da Count Basie.
Freddie Hubbard è il primo fra i trombettisti, seguito da Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie. Severinsen, Oscar Brashear, Jon Faddis e Clark Terry.
Trombonista numero uno è J J Johnson; secondo Cari Fontana, terzo Curtis Fuller, quarto Vick Dickenson.

Cannonball Adderley is the winner among alto saxophonists, followed by Phil Woods, Paul Desmond, Ornette Coleman, and Sonni Stitt.
